Racing Resumes on the Space Coast

Racing in the area is about to get started again.

MYC has stated they plan to resume the Rum Race series starting this coming Friday. They also intend to restart the Full Moon series as well (next scheduled in June), As as well as continuing Small Boat Sunday. It was stated that the MYC Spring regattas that were missed will not be rescheduled. No official word has yet been announced regarding when the newly rebranded “Women On the Water” series will officially restart, but they are considering a low key event for May 30th.

IRYC states that they intend to resume all series (Wednesday Night, Sunday, Dragon Point) starting in June. The annual Brevard Challenge regatta is cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

In out of town news, Halifax River Yacht Club has posted the NOR for their Old Timers Regatta on Regatta Network. This event is scheduled fire May 24th and People I have spoken with say the intent is to race from the Ponce MoA boy north up the beach to the Main Street Pier area and then back again — roughly 20 miles point-to-point. There are no shore-based activities with this regatta, but there may be an online skippers meeting. At least one local boat intends to make the trip up for this race.

I have heard scuttlebutt that Fort Pierce is considering an offshore event, but I do not have any concrete information on this.

MYC Small Boat Sunday is on

From MYC:

Small Boat Sunday Sailing is ON!

Sailing your single-handed Sunfish or Laser is the perfect way to practice social distancing. Double-handed 420s can be sailed by two family members.  Space Coast Sailing will have a challenge for kids skippering a parent or other family member as crew.    Karen will be setting up a racecourse for a 1:00 PM starting time.  The long range forecast is is dry with mid-teen winds. The bar will be closed but the racecourse is open.  While ashore, please do practice social distancing (see image above –ed) but don’t let that spoil a good sailing day.

If you want to sail a 420, please let Phil know at 321-514-2525 or pspletter@cfl.rr.com.  MYC members will have priority.

RS Aero Midwinters Adds Lasers and Sunfish to the Event

Sunfish and Laser sailors are invited to fun race at the RS Aero Midwinters at Kelly Park on Merritt Island on February 7-9. These classes will have a separate start and will pay no entry fees, but will sign a release, and will receive no awards other than bragging rights. You will be sailing with a substantial and competitive Aero fleet that will enjoy your company on the water. The Regatta NoR is on Regatta Network for further information. Please come join us!

Also, there are several new RS Aero charter boats available for those who may want to compete in the Aero Midwinters fleet. Marc Jacobi will conduct a clinic on February 6 to introduce the boat and share go fast tips. To charter contact Marc at USA@RSAerosailing.org. There are currently 15 boats registered and a fleet topping twenty boats is expected. Come join us and find out why this boat was the winner of the Olympic dinghy trials!

Support Local Youth Sailing by Drinking Beer

Space Coast Sailing Education Foundation (not to be confused with this web site) provides a framework for youth to learn teamwork, perseverance, self reliance, leadership, and critical thinking skills. Time on the water also promotes athleticism, and it cultivates respect for the outdoors and for our lagoon environment.
